Bear Attempts Forced Entry Into Home

The state set a trap for a mother black bear accused of showing
no fear of humans and attempting to gain forced entry to a
Hardyston home this week.

A township resident, who did not want to release her name,
called her three children into the house for breakfast from the
back deck Tuesday morning just before 9 a.m. As the last child
entered the house, the woman observed a large, adult black bear
jump over the deck railing and approach the door where she was
standing.
The mother yelled at the adult animal but the bear wouldnt yield
and continued to approach, said Al Ivany, spokesman for the state
Division of Fish and Wildlife.

The mother closed the door to
prevent the bear from entering the home.
The Category One black bear is presumably a female, Ivany said,
because the bruin was accompanied onto the deck by two cubs and a
third cub was observed sitting about 30 feet from the house
door.
After closing the inner door to the house, the township woman
fainted and hit her head against a wall, Ivany said. Her eldest son
dialed 9-1-1, and township officers responded to the scene.

The officers fired one round of rubber buckshot at the bear from
20 yards and the officer said the bears ran into the woods, Ivany
said. This is an incident where having the opportunity, the
Hardyston police could kill the bear if they have a clear shot.
This was a pretty serious incident, Ivany said, crediting the
Hardyston resident for quick thinking to close the door, thus
preventing the bruins entry to the home. Thats a very serious
incident, and again, now we have a bear attempting to break into a
house with its three cubs watching (and learning).

Representatives from the divisions bear management program
responded to the scene to set a trap for the bruin Tuesday, and
they reported that the female bear had also pushed in an outer
screen door to the home, Ivany said.
Family pastor Rev. David Dykstra of the Reformed Baptist Church
in Lafayette talked about the incident Wednesday at the Vernon
Township High School bear meeting, co-sponsored by the state
Division of Fish and Wildlife and the Vernon Police Department.
State Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bradley
Campbell also attended the meeting to hear public concerns,
questions and comments.

In response to the bear discussion forum, the Vernon Township
Council will consider passing a resolution at its Aug. 12 meeting
allowing a non-binding referendum vote to hold a limited bear hunt.
However, the state has the final decision on holding a hunt.
As the largest municipality in northwest New Jersey, and with a
large and growing bear population, Vernon would be uniquely
qualified to provide a true read of citizen sentiment on whether a
limited bear hunt should be a part of the bear population control
mix, Vernon Mayor John Logan said Thursday in a press release.

, I
am sure that the Vernon Town(ship) Council will welcome this
opportunity to partner with the DEP to address this pressing
issue.
