Tennis balling in IIAC tourney
The Norse tennis team competed in the IIAC individual
championships last Saturday and Sunday in Cedar Rapids.
The women scored 76 points en route to gaining the first seed in
this weekend's conference team championships in Pella, Iowa.
Four of the six singles competitors for the Norse finished in
first, while two of the three doubles duos finished first. The
women had one second and two third-place finishes.
Kirsten Madsen ('06), competing in the #1 singles spot, lost her
semifinal match but came back and won her third place match.
Annalise Conaway ('07) got to the finals match at #2 singles,
but couldn't quite win it all.
At #3, Molly Beyer ('08) had no trouble taking first, dropping a
total of only eight
games.
Competing in the #4 slot, Tash Allemang ('06) also had no
problems rolling over the competition to first place.
Tara Huinker ('06), at the #5 spot, did not have quite as easy a
time, but still had a great day,
taking first place.
Taylor Cochrane ('09), the young gun competing at the #6 spot,
took first place.
In #1 doubles, Huinker and Madsen took third. The tandems of
Allemang-Conaway and Beyer-Amy Christenson ('08), competing in #2
and #3 doubles, respectively, each took first.
Golf takes 11th at IIAC tourney
The young women's golf team finished out their season at the
IIAC championships last weekend, taking sixth place of the nine
conference teams.
Leading the Norse was first-year Lindsay Thies, taking ninth
place overall with a four-round shot total of 337.
Christie Anderson ('09) tied for 21st place, 355, Jenessa
Bonikowske ('08) took 28th, 364, while first-years Amy Ekland, 369,
and Ellen Miller, 381, tied for 29th and took 35th,
respectively.
Although the finish might not be what they were looking for, the
Norse will come back next year with all five starters
returning.
Soccer back on track
The women's soccer team got back on track this week, with wins
at Buena Vista, 3-2, and against Coe at
home, 4-0, Sunday and Wednesday,
respectively.
The wins raised the team's IIAC record to 2-1, and 6-5-2
overall.
Laura Heidt ('07) did all the damage for the Norse, recording
the hat trick with all three of the goals.
Hosting Coe, the women busted out of their offensive slump with
a big 4-0 drumming of the Kohawks.
Emily Ironside ('09) led the Norse attack with her 11th and 12th
goals of the season.
Emily Jacob ('07) knocked in the first and
winning goal off of a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Sarah
Walters ('09) added a goal off of another penalty kick in the 64th
minute.
Lilly Steinberg ('07) played all 90 minutes at the net with
three saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
Cross Country running wild
The women's cross country team took third place in the Dan
Huston Invitational in Waverly last Saturday.
Two first-years led the pack for the Norse. Amber Uhlenhake
crossed the line at 15:20 and Janet Dobyns finished right behind
her. They scored 9 and 10 points for the team, respectively.
Emily Lynch ('06) was next for the Norse, scoring 18 points with
a 15:44 finish.
Joanna Clagnaz ('07) crossed eight seconds later
for a 21 point finish.
Rounding out the top seven for the women were Devin Parker
('09), 16:06, Erilynn Russo ('06), 16:07 and Heidi Skildum ('08),
16:27 for 25, 26, and 31 point finishes, respectively.
The women have finished in the top five all four races that they
have participated in, but have yet to all-out win a race.
Volleyball gets second win
The Norse volleyball team finally caught a break, winning their
second match of the season during the Border Battle, hosted by
Gustavus (Minn.
) Oct. 7-8.
The women were defeated by host Gustavus, St. Mary's (Minn.
) and
St. Olaf (Minn.) before defeating Macalester College (Minn.) three
sets to one.
The team had a good day on Sunday, taking St. Olaf to a deciding
fifth set before falling just short before winning their second
match of the day against Macalester.
Saturday was a rough day for the Norse, winning only one of
seven sets.
For her efforts, Katie Hopp ('06) was named to the
All-Tournament team, accumulating 47 kills and acing eight
serves.
