Women's soccer finishes third in IIAC tourney
Women's soccer finishes third in IIAC tourney

The Luther women's soccer team came very close to winning a spot
in the championship game of the IIAC tournament at Upper Iowa
University in Fayette last week.
However, an upset to second-seed
Simpson in overtime ended the chance to advance to nationals.
The Norse began the tournament with success by defeating Loras
in the first round 2-1 on Oct. 25. Erin Riedesel ('04) scored two
goals in the first half of the game with assists by Anne Peterson
('04), Jen Shinbori ('02), and Erika Hegland ('03).
Loras scored
its solo goal in the second half, and Luther's Michelle Edelmann
('04) guarded the goal with five crucial saves. The women then
advanced to the second round of the tournament to face Simpson.
On Friday, Oct. 27, Luther met Simpson for a neck-and-neck game
of soccer.
The women went into halftime with the lead after a
Shinbori goal in the fifteenth minute that was assisted by
Riedesel. However, Simpson scored a goal in the second half, and in
overtime, it took only one minute and 30 seconds for Simpson to
score the game winner that assured them a spot in the championship
game. For Luther, the heartbreaker proved to be the only time in
school history where the Norse haven't played in the championship
match of the IIAC tourney.
The Norse played Cornell on Oct.
28 for third place and were
victorious 2-0. Shinbori scored both goals, one in each half, to
complete the win with assists by Bess Sorensen ('01) and Dawn
Borcherding ('02). Edelmann had 14 saves at the goal.
The women end the season saying good-bye to seniors Sorensen and
Julie Satre ('01).
With a young team on their side, the loss this
year in the tournament may be reconciled next year.
